Preparing Your Boat – The Pre-Season Checklist

Use this checklist to prepare your boat for the upcoming season:

Trailer
Make sure your tags and registration are up-to-date.
Check your brake lights.
Check the tires for wear, dry rot and proper pressure.
Locate your safety chains.
Lubricate the wheel bearings, winch and tongue lock liberally with WD-40.
Take your trailer on a test run: listen for squealing brakes, dragging chains and other hazards.

Outboard Motor
Check your prop for nicks and bends. (buy a second prop to store on-board for emergencies.)
Inspect your fuel lines, primer bulb and tanks for rust or leaks.
Replace your spark plugs. (buy some spare ones to keep on-board.)
Lubricate moveable parts.

The Hull
Check the hull for damage, rot or wear.
Check and replace zinks if applicable.
Check your trim tabs for corrosion and functionality.
Check your swim platform for rust, rot and corrosion.
Check your rub rails, make sure they are attached securely to the hull.

The Electrical System
Test your battery and replace if necessary. (Purchase a second backup battery to store on-board in case of an emergency.)
Check the battery terminals for corrosion, clean and lubricate them.
Check to see if your anchor light is working, replace the bulb if necessary.
Check to see if your bilge pump is functioning.
Check to see if your VHS radio is working.
If you have a GPS system check that as well.

Compartments and Required Equipment
Make sure you have the required emergency equipment on-board and can pass an inspection by Florida Keys Marine Patrol.
A life preserver for every person on board.
A fire extinguisher
A functioning VHS radio
A compass
A chart of the local waters
Functioning navigation lights
A First-Aid Kit
Distress Flares
A Sound Signaling Device
A Hand Bailing Device
and a Suitable Anchor for the size of your vessel.
