So you’ve already planned your trip to the keys, You’ve reserved your flight and hotel…but now it’s time to think about what to wear.
Don’t overdress – thinking stilettos- forget about it. There are no malls or department stores on the islands, so the only thing locals wear is what’s available at the local t-shirt and sandal shops. Flip-flops are totally acceptable at weddings and funerals. Everywhere you go, you’ll need practical shoes- you’ll encounter lots of sand, slippery docks and boats.
For Women: we recommend deck shoes like Perry Docksiders, athletic sandals like Tevas, cute sandals and a pair of wedges. Bring plenty of bikinis, but also an athletic one-piece suit for snorkeling or scuba diving. For afternoons by the pool or out-on-the water, nix the embellished tunics and sarongs. Opt instead for cute surfer styled pull-overs, cut-off jeans and sandals. For an evening out on the town, steer clear of stilettos and dresses, you’ll look like a high-maintenance tourist. Think Boho chic, or sexy seventies. Don a pair of practical wedges, figure-flattering jeans and a tank top or romantic off-the-shoulder blouse. Skip the designer bag. Go with a simple wallet, or cross-body bag. The keys are spontaneous…dinner on the patio, may be followed by an impromptu walk on the beach or invite out on a boat…dress accordingly.
For Men: Deck Shoes like Perry Docksiders, athletic sandals like Tevas, and some Chuka boots will cover you for shoes. Jeans paired with a Guayabara or Anglers shirt are what everyone wears on the islands. Cargo shorts and surfer-style board shorts will get a lot of wear. A lightweight hoodie is a good idea too, especially if you’re doing any boating.
