LONG KEY STATE PARK
Located in the middle keys at mile-marker 67.5, Long key was once the site of Henry Flagler’s Fishing Camp. In the early 20th century, the fishing camp was a popular luxury destination along Flagler’s railroad for the rich and famous, as well as many of the world’s great salt water anglers of the time. The entire facility was destroyed during the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and never reopened. Today it is a state park. This park spreads out over 60 full facility campsites with picnic areas and two nature trails to hike, the Golden Orb, which covers a 1.1 mile distance and the Layton Trail, which takes you to the water’s edge on the bay side. The campsites face the Atlantic ocean and have white sand grounds. The shallow waters surrounding the park offer excellent kayaking, canoeing, swimming and snorkeling. Campers are welcome to fish, but a license is required. There are also lots of picnic tables and grills available along the shoreline.
