The Florida Keys are magnificent, and truly a national treasure, but they are small, and fragile with a unique ecosystem, that can be gravely impacted by tourism. These tiny islands attract visitors in numbers that rival the major metropolitan areas of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
There’s exquisite beauty to behold, but few natural resources. Things that tourists take for granted, like fresh water are scarce here.
To maintain the uniqueness, authenticity and charm of the keys- large corporate chain hotels and restaurants have been discouraged. Most of the businesses operating in the keys are home-grown and family owned.
Keys tourism is also seasonal in nature. Tourist season begins about the second week of October and lasts until mid April. Due to this seasonality, many year-round residents work 2 jobs during high season. The cordial bartender at your resort, may also be the local kindergarten teacher.
Vacation rentals are often located in residential areas. If you are staying at a vacation rental home, remember, your next door neighbor might just be the local police chief.
Sooo….If you decide to visit, please be a good guest.
Follow posted speed limits.
Use ride share services like Uber or cabs when bar-hopping. Remember – there is only one road in the keys – and it is patrolled heavily by police.
When staying at vacation rental in a residential area – keep the noise down, don’t block driveways and dispose of all trash.
Never throw trash or pour anything into the ocean. The plastic items you throw into the water today – kill turtles and other marine life tomorrow.
Conserve water – it is EXPENSIVE in the keys, never let hoses or faucets run for long periods of time.
Don’t trash local motels, hotels, resorts, attractions and restaurants on social media sites. Most are family owned businesses. Manage your expectations and be mindful of where you are… hot humid weather, mosquitoes, tropical storms, traffic, and overwhelmed attractions and restaurants on holiday weekends should be expected.
Be Kind and Unwind While Visiting The Keys.
