Melamine? While you may not be familiar with the name – you’ve seen it – at Target, Walmart, Kmart and other discount retailers. It’s really durable plastic dishware that’s inexpensive, dishwasher safe, practical, and kid friendly. At first glance – it appears to be fine dishware – but it’s deceivingly good looks are just part of the story. Caterers, event planners and savvy mom’s were the first adapters. Today, high-end brands like Neiman Marcus, Williams Sonoma, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Pier 1 Imports and others are adding collections to their repertoire.
They are great for keys-living. They’re versatile – perfect for pool-side parties, beach picnics and sunset celebrations on the boat.
They come in an endless assortment of patterns and colors and are so affordable that we recommend buying several sets to mix and match. Purchase inexpensive chargers at Dollar stores to pair them with more decorative pieces. Spend as much or as little as you want – the end result will still look fabulous.
Your relatively small investment will last for years, as they are practically indestructible. Use them, don’t fret if you loose them, (they are easy to replace), collect them, and have tons of fun in the meantime.
Who Knows…perhaps an enterprising woman somewhere will capitalize on this trend, and the Melamine party will replace the Tupperware party.
