Since 1951, Alex & Bertha Popp have operated this beloved motel. It’s 2 palm-tree covered bayside acres at mile marker 95 in Key Largo. Generations of families have enjoyed it’s quaint marmalade colored cottages and sandy beach.
The cottages are clean and efficient, each with a kitchenette with a full size refrigerator, stove, microwave cupboard of dishes and sink. Above the sink, ruffled white cafe curtains blow gently in the sea breeze. There’s an air conditioner protruding from the wall, a small table and 4 chairs, and 2 beds. The windows are the original 1950’s jalousies. You’ll feel more like you’re visiting Grandpa’s cherished fishing camp when you were a kid, and less like you’re staying at a chain hotel.
You can bring your boat. You’ll have to launch it at a nearby boat ramp, but you can keep it tied to the dock for the duration of your stay. The waters surrounding Popp’s are crystal clear with a sandy bottom. You can snorkel, paddle board, kayak and canoe right off the beach.
There are lots of palm trees, several lounge chairs for sunbathing, hammocks, a large chickee hut, grills a shuffleboard and basketball court.
Popp’s is the kind of place where you can linger. There’s no paved parking lot, posted check-out times, or maid carts lining the terraces. Here you can get up before everyone else for a sunrise kayak, while away an afternoon in a hammock with a good book, or head in to town for supplies for your evening cook-out.
It’s not fast paced, it’s not modern, it’s not fancy, it’s just Popp’s.
